Should I Use Beard Oil?

The first beard showed up in this world about 20 to 30 years after God created the first man. That is unless the first boy child was born with a full beard in-tact. In all seriousness, beards have been around a long, long time. We think it may have been Adam that asked the first question, "Should I use beard oil?" Since this and related questions have been asked so many times throughout the years, we decided to put together a comprehensive list answering the top 7 questions about beard oil. But if you are the type to want a spoiler:  yes, you should use beard oil.

Are beard oils safe?

As a whole, the answer is yes. We have seen beard oils that contain more different ingredients than you can imagine, and it seems that every beard oil company is trying to top the rest by coming up with the latest and most exceptional elements. At times, this can make for a questionable combination of ingredients that can irritate or inflame the skin beneath your beard.

Beard oils all have what's called "carrier oils" that form the base formulation of the beard product. Argan, Apricot Kernel, Jojoba, Sunflower, Avocado, Olive, Coconut, Black Seed, Castor, Rice Bran, Sweet Almond, Grapeseed, and Vitamin E oil are among the most popular. Cottonseed, Milk Thistle Seed, and others are common.

There are not many problems with the most commonly used carrier oils when it comes to being safe; however, some of the conventional carrier oils do not have a long shelf life and can become stale over time. This situation is one that you genuinely want to avoid.

The biggest issue is usually with the "essential oils" that beard oil makers add to the carrier oils to give them their "scent" and, at times, a wild stretch of the imagination more (we recently saw one beard oil that claimed to help you lose weight due to the essential oils in it.) The essential oils typically added to beard oil mixtures include such things as Lavender, Patchouli, Rosemary, Cedar, Hemp variations, Clove, Lemon, Peppermint, Pine, Sandalwood, Tea Tree, and Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, Bergamot, and others. Herein lies the typical problem with beard oils and safety.

Depending on your skin sensitivity, some of these essential oils used in beard oil combinations may truly irritate your skin and create an unpleasant situation on your face. The only way to be sure is to avoid ingredients that you have a known sensitivity to and always choose a known and reputable beard oil over a "made in the kitchen of the apartment" brand that is very prevalent.

Is Beard Oil Effective?

In a word, yes. If the question is "are beard oils effective at conditioning, moisturizing and maintaining a healthy beard." And the answer is "no" if the question is "will beard oil make me grow a beard faster and thicker?" at least, not directly. It's sad, but true, that we, as men tend to look for the quick fix for our beard growth like some people, look for a quick fix weight loss option or a get rich quick scheme.

The truth is, excellent beard oil is going to help keep your face, more specifically, your beard and skin become healthier, and that translates into the best possible environment for beard growth. Not only that, but beard oil is going to keep your existing whiskers looking their nourished, conditioned best.

HOW DOES BEARD OIL WORK?

First, one must understand how a beard grows and is maintained naturally to know how beard oil can help. It all starts with this great, albeit somewhat nasty-sounding oil called "sebum." According to Verywell Health, [What is "sebum"], "Sebum is a light yellow, oily substance that is secreted by the sebaceous glands that help keep the skin and hair moisturized. Sebum, made up of triglycerides, free fatty acids, wax esters, squalene, cholesterol esters, and cholesterol. It also includes lipids from skin cells, sweat, and environmental matter."

A little disturbing, isn't it? A sticky, yellow substance secreted by your sebaceous glands? But, oddly enough, this is precisely what keeps your skin and beard naturally moisturized and looking their best. Therefore, the best beard oils mimic and enhance this natural occurrence. If we are good at creating exemplary beard oil, we can even add to the benefits of sebum and create an even better result for your beard.

The base oils in our Tactical Beard products are very complementary to your natural sebum. Tactical Beard Oil from TacticalBeards.com has several of the best carrier oils in it, including Avocado Oil, Hemp Seed Oil, Cherry Kernel Oil, and Abyssinian Seed Oil. Perhaps a better understanding of each of these oils is in order.

What Is In Beard Oil?

Avocado Oil is full of vitamins A, B5, and E, minerals, and numerous antioxidants as well as potassium and lecithin. It absorbs quickly into your beard and, as a considerable side benefit, is excellent for your skin. The fact is, you can use our Tactical Beard Oil directly on your skin as a skin serum. It also works very well when you are in the "growing" phase of a beard as well. One day that scruff is going to be the leading edge, the most tenured part of your beard, so treat it right, starting now. A good dose of beard oil containing lots of avocado oil is excellent for that!

Avocado oil is very light and easy to apply to your beard. Because it is a lighter oil, you don't have to worry about it building up and clogging pores or attracting dust and dirt into your beard. Thanks to the molecular structure of Avocado oil, it can penetrate the hair deeply and bring a high level of conditioning and moisturizing to your beard.

The second ingredient in Tactical Beard Oil is Hemp Seed Oil, cold-pressed from the seeds of the Hemp plant. Mind you, this isn't the same as CBD, extracted from the flowers and leaves of the Hemp plant. Interestingly, according to NaturallyCurly.com, [How to use Hemp for softer hair.] Hemp seed oil, pressed from the seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant, contains 80% essential fatty acids, which is the highest in any plant on the planet. You probably already know that essential fatty acids mean great things for your beard. It turns out that these fatty acids (lipids) in Hemp Seed Oil are very similar to the naturally occurring lipids in our skin and hair. Hemp Seed Oil also contains a fair amount of GLA (gamma-linoleic acid), which helps keratin formation. In simple terms, that means stronger and healthier beards.

Cherry Kernal Oil is the third most prevalent oil in our Tactical Beard Oil. Known for being substantial in Vitamin A and serving as a natural emollient, Cherry Kernal Oil is a natural ingredient that compliments the Avocado and Hemp Seed Oils. Not only does Cherry Kernal Oil have high concentrations of Vitamin A, but it also is high in natural tocopherols, which are components of Vitamin E, which serves as a rich antioxidant.

One of the enemies of a glorious, thick, and healthy beard is split ends and damage. Cherry Kernal Oil can help eliminate this type of beard damage. It is not greasy and heavy and can bring softness and shine to your beard.

Beyond the "carrier" oils that give Tactical Beard Oil many of its great attributes, each beautiful bottle of Tactical Beard Oil also contains 100 percent pure essential oils. These essential oils provide great aromatics that have meaning at Tactical Beards. For example, our scent AD VICTORIUM means "For Victory" in Latin and includes Spicy-Sweet, Musk, and Sandalwood scented natural oils. There are six other scents that each have a profound meaning, all related to living a tactical life. A life lived with intent, with purpose.

Will Beard Oil Help Me Grow A Beard Faster or fuller?

In a word, no, but there is a caveat to that. Any beard product that tells you that by merely using their product, you can grow a beard faster or fuller, -as if by magic, is misleading you. That said, the concept of gaining and maintaining a healthy environment on your face for a beard to grow can and will lead you to a faster-growing and stronger beard.

Imagine trying to grow a healthy garden in dry, nutrient-depleted soil. The chances are that the plants are going to be weak and not grow too well. The same concept holds for your face. If you want to grow a great beard, you need a healthy environment to do so. That is precisely where using Tactical Beard Oil can play a significant role.

You already know that the natural oils used in Tactical Beard Oil are blended because each brings its list of strengths to the mix. When you use Tactical Beard Oil on your face and beard, you are making significant steps in the right direction to help provide just the right environment for your beard to grow faster and thicker.

How Should I Use Beard Oil?

  • May be used more than once per day
  • Best used as a conditioner or moisturizer
  • Apply either after a shower or before bed for best results
  • Apply to palm and fingertips then work deep into beard to the skin
  • Use a stainless steel comb heated in hot water to spread oil thru beard
  • Choose a scent that makes you feel good when you smell it

Beard oil should be considered a "healer" and a "protector" and not necessarily a "holder" if that makes sense. In other words, beard oil, especially Tactical Beard Oil is formulated to provide hydration, conditioning, and repair for your beard, but not to style and hold it unless you are one of those lucky fellas that doesn't need a ton of "hold." Those duties are best left to our Tactical Beard Balm and Tactical Beard Butter, depending on your personal needs. Of course, some men do like to add some beard oil to their beard before glazing their beard with beard balm, and that is absolutely perfect.

We recommend using beard oil at least twice per day, and here's how. First, start with an immaculately clean beard. That means that some form of beard wash (such as our Aloe & Hemp Beard Wash) or a more traditional bar of beard soap (such as our Beard, Face & Moustache Soap) must be used to scrub your face mullet clean.

Once out of the shower, you should towel dry your beard then put a small portion of our Tactical Beard Oil into your palm. Rub your hands together, spreading the beard oil throughout your palms to your fingertips. Next, work the beard oil into your beard, paying particular attention to push the oil down to the roots of your beard and onto your underlying skin.

The key to proper beard oil application is to work the oil through your beard thoroughly, making sure that plenty of it reaches your skin. One way to help distribute Tactical Beard Oil is to have one of our Bisson Stainless Steel Beard Combs at the ready. All you have to do is heat the beard comb under hot, running water then dry it with a towel. Next, use it to comb the beard oil deeply into your beard.

The next best time to use beard oil is in the evening, just before bed. A clean beard is always the best starting point, but when you are using Tactical Beard Oil as a deep conditioner for your face and beard, you can apply it as is.

In the case that you want to deep condition your beard, apply a liberal amount of beard oil just as you would after a shower. The result will be waking up to a well-conditioned, soft, and supple beard, ready to take on whatever challenges you face that day.
