Beard Growth: Stop The Lies

A few weeks ago, I was in the local coffee shop choking down a cup of go-go juice. As I sat there, a man sitting at the next table caught my attention and said: "Can I ask you a personal question?" Not overthinking about it, I said, "sure!" His question was one that I hear ALL the time, which was, "Can you tell me how to grow a beard like yours?' Well, that's not exactly the question I get all the time, but it's close. The actual question is more along the lines of "how can I grow a beard faster/thicker?" I assume that it is similar to a personal trainer bombarded with "how can I lose weight fast?" My expected 20 minutes at the coffee shop turned into an hour or more as I delved into the deeper aspects of growing a beard like mine.

So I intend to address that particular question and provide some insight that may help you if you are wondering the same thing. But, before we dive into it, let me say this, growing a beard faster and thicker is a complicated process; however, there is a path through the beard-growing process that is easy and basic. For most of us of the bearded brethren, easy and basic is good! 

How Does A Beard Grow? The Basics

The majority of how a beard grows is determined by your grandpa, great-grandpa, or, essentially, every relative before you. Why? Because your ability to grow a beard is based very much on genetics. The number of hair follicles you have on your face, the color of your beard hairs, and even the thickness of each beard hair strand is mostly a factor of genetics.

Once you have a predetermined number of hair follicles, the actual process of hair growth has to do with testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (also known as DHT). There is a direct relationship between the levels of testosterone and hair growth is fascinating. Bear with me as we dive just a bit into the science behind it. If you hang through this, you will be glad you did!

It seems that regular testosterone gets converted into the potent androgen dihydrotestosterone, again, known as DHT. The cool thing and the not so cool thing about DHT is that when you have more of it built up and active in the hairs on your head, you tend to lose hair. However, the same DHT on your face makes for some severely impressive beardedness. 


Why Do I Have A Patchy or Thin Beard?

The fact is, many men don't have as many hair follicles on their faces as other men do. Again, that's a matter of genetics. When a man has fewer hair follicles in certain areas of his face, patchiness is likely. At the same time, if a man has less DHT stimulation in areas of his face, even with enough hair follicles, the same result ensues.

What's interesting is many men have tried to grow a beard at some point in the past. Perhaps during that time, they had an imbalance of DHT going on. If so, they may have decided that they can't grow a beard or that if they can, it's going to be patchy. While this may very well be, it's worth another effort to make sure that a DHT issue wasn't going on at the time. The reality is that someone who may have lived many years under the false belief that they can't have a great beard, really can.

Here's where it gets a little more complicated, though. You see, there are three phases of "life" for hair. The phases are Anagen, which is the growth phase and lasts two to six years. The next phase is Catagen, which is two weeks of follicle renewal. The final phase is Telogen. This final phase is one to four months. The cycles repeat over and over. However, there are a few instances where the time for the cycles can become disrupted.

If you are trying to grow a beard during a time when many of your hairs are in the telogen cycle, you are going to have a patchy beard. And how do you know which phase your "would be" beard is? You don't. It's a matter of try, then try again. But, the good news is that there are other factors that you control to gain a great beard.


The fact is that you have to have enough hair follicles on your face with which to work. Assuming that you do, the next step is to attempt to leverage your levels of DHT. Keeping in mind that too much DHT in the wrong follicles will give you male pattern baldness. Scary stuff. So what's the best approach?

We recommend a clean, safe, and more holistic approach. That means doing everything you can to maintain a naturally healthy testosterone level. According to Healthline.com (8 Ways To Boost Testosterone), that includes getting exercise, eating a balanced diet, getting plenty of good sleep, minimizing stress, and getting some good sunlight or taking Vitamin D. 

Of course, gaining or maintaining a healthy testosterone level (and ultimately, a healthy level of DHT) needs to happen when those hairs on your face are in their anagen phase or growth phase. Again, there is no easy way to know when the anagen phase is in effect for your beard hairs, so the best plan is to get your testosterone levels balanced for the long term.

But, the potential of a beard is realized on levels more shallow than those of androgens and such. The other aspect of significant beard growth is much more shallow! What do I mean? Glad you asked. I strongly suggest that you can't grow a beard faster with some snake oil "beard growth" in a bottle that so many are peddling as legitimate these days. That's right. You can't grow a beard by some magical topical oil or cream that you apply to your face. Save your money. That's all Houdini stuff, but the only thing disappearing is your cash.

What you can do is create the best, most healthy environment on your face for your beard to grow. How do you do that? Simple. It begins with proper cleansing of your skin and beard. It's a sad fact that some of the companies out there are producing products that make claims of growing a beard faster or thicker because they know that people just like you want that. You have learned that there is a pathway to a faster-growing, thicker beard, but it has to do with so much more than some miracle pill or cream. 



Can you grow a beard faster or thicker? Maybe. Maybe not. We would suggest that you give it a serious try, though. Start with working on getting your testosterone level to a healthy level. Enlist the help of a great doctor if you need to. A simple blood test can tell you exactly where your testosterone and DHT levels are. Once you have that information, you can modify your lifestyle to enhance your testosterone levels, if necessary, naturally.

From the beginning of your journey to grow a glorious beard, you should start cleansing your face daily and applying either tactical Beard Oil or Tactical Beard Butter to your skin and stubble. Over time, you will see how your beard is going to grow. If it is patchy, or thinner, don't get discouraged, stay at it. It is possible that when your testosterone level is right, your face is well taken care of and your hair is in the growth phase, you can have a great beard.
